The Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest (NARA-NW) is Indian-owned and Indian-operated. Established in 1970, NARA-NW employs over one hundred workers in five Portland locations. As a private, non-profit organization, we provide culturally appropriate services (physical/mental health and substance abuse treatment) for American Indians, Alaska Natives and other vulnerable peoples.
CURRENT EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
ADMINISTRATION GRANT WRITER: The Grant Writers primary responsibility is to write proposals to obtain new grants, contracts, or other outside funding for new and existing programs. Will assemble data and type routine monthly and quarterly progress reports for contracts and grants, maintains active grant book records and grant archive files, and performs data collection and data entry for grant management, grant opportunity research, and program evaluation activities. Also will conduct grant opportunity research utilizing reference directories and Internet web sites. Assists grant managers with preparation of new grant proposals by writing proposals, researching necessary data, assembling supporting documents, etc. Researches sources and writes letters for in-kind donations. Provides on-going assistance in the development of grant reports, data management, and budgets. TO QUALIFY: Position requires a Bachelors Degree in relevant field plus 1 year grant writing/fund raising experience OR post high school education plus 3 years grant writing/fund raising experience. Must have working knowledge with MS Word and Excel and skill and experience in organizing information, technical report writing, and library research. Must have excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with teams.
RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT RESIDENTIAL A & D TREATMENT COUNSELOR: Provides treatment groups to clients living in residential treatment facility utilizing a collaborative process that facilitates the client’s progress toward mutually determined treatment goals and objectives. Works with clients to establish realistic, achievable goals consistent with achieving and maintaining recovery. Will provide weekly 1-to-1 counseling for assigned clients, provide referrals, complete charting & documentation and facilitate group sessions, including organizing materials (books, slides, films) and equipment. TO QUALIFY: HS Diploma or equivalent. Must have CADC1 or CDS1 or higher w/at least 1 year paid experience as a chemical dependency counselor & experience presenting Treatment Groups. There is no bus service to this location so must have reliable transportation. Candidates must demonstrate disciplined empathy for alcohol/drug abuse clients and an understanding of the illness concept of alcoholism/drug abuse, plus demonstrate knowledge of AA, NA, Alateen and other support programs.

FAMILY SERVICES MENTAL HEALTH CLINICAL MANAGER – SYSTEMS OF CARE We are currently seeking an experienced MH Clinical Manager to supervise and lead the projects clinical staff and assure the quality of the mental health services provided. Though a new SAMHSA grant the NARA Systems of Care Project goal is to develop and implement a culturally relevant, family centered system of care for urban American Indian/Alaska native children and youth, ages 9-21, diagnosed as, or at risk of becoming, seriously emotionally or behaviorally disturbed. The MH Clinical Manager will be responsible for clinical supervision, as well as conducting assessments & individual, group, couple, family and multifamily therapy sessions. Will also assist in the development and implementation of project services & policies and serve as consultant and liaison with referral sources and treatment providers. TO QUALIFY: Requires a Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, current licensure as an LCSW, LPC, LMFT w/dual diagnosis experience; a minimum of 5 years paid progressive experience in a behavioral health program providing services to children, youth & families & clinical supervision experience of MH Clinicians. Must have knowledge and experience of trauma informed treatment & meet minimum requirements as a QHMP. Verifiable experience and success working in a multi-cultural environment and experience working with a wraparound and/or strengths based model and advanced ability to work collaboratively within and outside of NARA. Alcohol & Drug Counseling Certification preferred.
FAMILY THERAPIST - SYSTEMS OF CARE: Will provide culturally appropriate clinical assessment and formulation, develop treatment plans and provide appropriate counseling as part of a Systems of Care for Native youth (9-21) and their families. Participates in a team that is family centered and strength based. Provides Wrap Around level of services in the community, schools and home setting. TO QUALIFY: Requires master’s level clinician, with 2 years paid mental health experience working with children and families, and superior communication and team skills. Licensure (LCSW or LPC), experience working with the Native American community and with culturally specific skills preferred. Requires skills, abilities and willingness in clinical documentation as per OAR’s and grant requirements. Position requires a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
CLINIC MEDICAL DIRECTOR: The NARA NW Medical Director is responsible for providing direct patient care while demonstrating awareness and sensitivity to Native American & other underserved populations healthcare needs, as well supervising all medical services provided at the Indian Health Clinic and throughout the organization. Will provide direct supervision to all physicians, FNP’s, RN’s & the dietician, monitors the quality of all medical treatment provided, and assures medical services are in full compliance with standards, ethics and license requirements of the medical profession. Also responsible for overseeing the on-site laboratory and Physician Dispensing Pharmacy. TO QUALIFY: Must be Board Certified in a related area of medicine (Family Practice pref.), with a current unencumbered Oregon Medical License. Position requires a minimum of 2 years experience providing direct patient care and administrative supervision as well as the ability to work with people from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds to explain and provide appropriate medical care. Must be able to work productively and collaboratively within a team environment. Experience working with the Native American/Alaska Native Community preferred.
MEDICAL ASSISTANT: The Indian Health Clinic is seeking a qualified and motivated Medical Assistant to join our team. Will prepare clients for treatment procedures or examinations, including obtaining pertinent information regarding visit, taking vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure) and recording info in the medical chart, and taking urine samples when indicated. Will also perform or prepare for procedures such as EKG'S, phlebotomy, injections, and hearing or vision tests. Perform CLIA-waived laboratory tests, such as urinalysis, urine HCG, rapid strep, and glucometer, helps maintain supplies for clinic and exam rooms, and cleans examination rooms after each use and prepares room for next client. Complete all necessary reports or documents and makes referral appointments. TO QUALIFY: Certification as a Medical Assistant or licensed as Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Oregon with a minimum of two years recent paid experience performing the responsibilities noted above. Medication aid certification a plus.
FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER Provide comprehensive primary health care in the NARA Indian Health Clinic. Coordinates patient care with other providers and agencies and advocates for client within health care systems. Provides services in prenatal integrated health care of high-risk chemically dependent pregnant patients in consultation and/or collaboration with obstetrical health care provider. Performs initial and ongoing health risk assessments and counseling for high-risk lifestyle behaviors and/or familial diseases (ongoing drug and alcohol assessment and HIV screening). Encourages family participation in health care of patient as deemed appropriate by patient and other clinic providers. Develops and document plan of care and outcomes evaluations. Coordinates with contractual pharmacy, primary care providers, hospitals, and laboratories for required diagnostic procedures and delivery/births. Provides health education to individual patients as needed, such as birth control, safer sex, high-risk behavior and health consequences. Participates in on-call service coverage, as needed. TO QUALIFY: Must have current, unencumbered licensure with State of Oregon as a Certified Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority. Evidence of experience sufficient for successful performance of duties noted above.
