 Current Projects

Ceremonial Plants Garden
Increasingly in Indian Country a "promising practice" in tobacco prevention is the creation of community gardens to grow tradtitional tobacco and other ceremonial plants in order to reduce community reliance on commercial tobacco products for ceremonial use. The UAITPEN is involved in an initiative in the Portland Metro area to create a community garden to increase access to ceremonial plants in an urban setting, and increase awareness about the importance of not using commercial tobacco in ceremony. This project is still in the planning phase. To be involved, call 503-230-9875, extension 273.

Integrating Tobacco Dependence into Treatment for Other Drugs
Through work on a comprehensive tobacco policy at NARA, we have learned the importance (and difficulties) of trying to integrate the treatment of tobacco addiction into treatment of other addictions. Based on both experience and research, our program can now provide technical assistance to organizations who are integrating the treatment of tobacco dependence into alcohol and drug treatment. To get help, call 503-230-9875, extension 273.

For more information about this issue, save the date: May 6, 2008, when we will be holding a summit on this topic. Also, see the "Integrating Tobacco Cessation into Alcohol & Other Drug Treatment" brochure on our free materials page.
